Rex Bledsoe, CEO of Aqua Design and die-hard Denver Broncos fan, started selling fly fishing and outdoor apparel for men in 1998. Twenty years later, 75% of his business is dedicated to one-of-a-kind clothing for women. Over the years, Aqua Design developed a lifestyle look that many women adore with beach, surf, and outdoor apparel in unique hydro-print patterns. Today a majority of their sales come from Amazon, but they’re also available on Walmart’s online marketplace as well as their own site.

“We’re very pleased with the success we’ve had, in part because of MerchantWords,” says Bledsoe. “After perusing the website for about a minute it didn’t take me long to realize the benefit of knowing what people are searching for, being able to take a CSV file and download it and really go through it and make sure that we were extracting keywords that are very specific to our product.”

Aqua Design uses MerchantWords to optimize all aspects of their product listings. “We wouldn’t consider, at this point, even building a listing without the use of MerchantWords. Without optimizing it’s going to be very difficult for people to find your great product,” said Bledsoe.

Using MerchantWords to Discover Negative Keywords

“When doing PPC on Amazon and using ads to leverage the platform, we find it’s not just enough to have people visit our page but it’s even more important to have the right people visit our page.” To avoid targeting the wrong shoppers, Aqua Design uses MerchantWords to find negative keywords as well. These keywords prevent your ad from being triggered by a certain word or phrase. “By using the negative keywords within the ad space we’re able to make certain we get the right people to our page that are interested in our product.”
